Patrons of the maiden Traditional Cuisine Festival in Ho were treated to a rich display of Volta Region’s culinary heritage, as chefs, students, and exhibitors showcased a variety of indigenous dishes to celebrate the region’s culture and traditions.

The festival, organised by the Volta Regional Office of the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in collaboration with GBC’s Volta Star Radio, formed part of the national Black Star Experience initiative under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Celebrating the Tastes of Volta.”

The event grounds came alive with the aroma of freshly prepared meals, with long tables of local dishes including akple, abolo, fetri detsi, ayimoloo, and other delicacies from across the region. Patrons had the opportunity to taste and learn about the preparation of these dishes, some of which are rarely found in commercial restaurants.

One participant, Edem Ocloo, a student from Mawuli School, said: “It’s exciting to taste meals we’ve only read about in textbooks. This festival is helping us connect with our roots.”

Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, who opened the festival, urged Ghanaians to embrace traditional cuisine as a tool for promoting culture, health, and local business growth.

The Volta Regional Director of CNC, Mrs. Lydia Nyarko-Ampomah, emphasised that the initiative seeks to preserve indigenous knowledge and promote pride in Ghana’s culinary heritage.

Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mr. Franklin Agbenyo, noted that the collaboration with CNC reflects GBC’s mission to promote culture and development.

The festival, also marking GBC’S 90th anniversary, featured cooking demonstrations, exhibitions, and food tasting sessions. Educational institutions, state agencies, and departments participated actively, turning the festival into a cultural learning experience for young people and visitors.

Organisers say the Traditional Cuisine Festival will become an annual event to celebrate the region’s culinary diversity while positioning the Volta Region as a cultural and tourism hub.
