Students of the Abutia Kpota E.P. Basic School in the Ho West District of the Volta Region are appealing for urgent attention to fix their deteriorating classroom structures, which they say make learning difficult and unsafe.
According to Adeti Anita, a pupil of the school, the poor state of the roofing often disrupts classes whenever it rains.
“Sometimes when you don’t expect the rain and it’s raining, the roofs are leaking so we have to come close where the leakage is not affected. This makes learning not interesting,” she said, adding that the situation affects concentration and comfort in class.

Another student, Ayikpah Seraphine, lamented the shortage of teachers and learning materials in the school.
“We have only three teachers here and no Ewe or Creative Arts teachers at all,” she said. “We don’t have textbooks, so teachers use their laptops and phones to teach, which makes it difficult for us.”
She appealed to government to provide textbooks and post more teachers to the school to improve teaching and learning conditions.
The Dufia of Abutia Kpota, Togbe Tsali IV, also echoed the students’ concerns, describing the situation as dire and calling on authorities to respond swiftly.
“The school buildings at the E.P. School are dilapidated now. We want urgent attention to be given to the school structures so that we can also have a befitting infrastructure for our pupils,” he said.

Togbe Tsali IV, further urged government and development partners to extend educational and infrastructural projects to the community, including the establishment of a senior high school to serve pupils who complete junior high but cannot continue elsewhere.
The appeals from both the students and the chief highlight the urgent need for intervention to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for children in the Abutia Kpota community.
