The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Central Tongu, Hon. Addisson Dodzi Mornyuie, has paid glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a gem whose lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment transformed Ghana’s social and political landscape.
Speaking in an interview with GBC’s Volta Star Radio, Hon. Mornyuie recounted how news of the passing of the former First Lady reached him while attending a party workshop in Accra on Thursday, 23rd October 2025. He recalled meeting her years ago at a similar workshop, where she warmly received him and his colleagues, a memory that, he said, reflects her humility and passion for advancing the cause of women.
“I first heard about Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings back in the 90s when I was in J.S.S. and developing interest in politics and current affairs,” he said. “She was so enthusiastic about women’s empowerment. We have lost a gem, but God knows best.”
Hon. Mornyuie emphasized the need to sustain the former First Lady’s vision of empowering women, noting that women form the bedrock of Ghana’s economy and play vital roles in community development.
Through the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings championed the rights, education, and economic independence of women, creating opportunities for their active participation in governance and national development.
Her impact continues to resonate across generations, with many describing her as a trailblazer and an icon of gender advocacy. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has also acknowledged her as a visionary leader whose work has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s socio-economic progress.
As the Central Tongu District joins the nation in mourning, Hon. Mornyuie’s tribute stands as a call to action, urging all to uphold and advance the ideals for which Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings stood: empowering women, promoting equality, and building a more inclusive Ghana.
