Civil Servants Urged to Maintain Neutrality Amidst Political Pressures

The Ho Central Constituency Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Sefadzi Agama, has underscored the need for civil servants to maintain neutrality and professionalism in the discharge of their duties amidst growing political pressures.

Speaking on the political segment of the Morning Show on GBC Volta Star Radio, Hon. Agama cautioned civil servants against using their offices to advance political interests.

He noted that civil servants who draw neutrality allowances are duty-bound to remain impartial and refrain from displaying partisan allegiance while on duty.

“Don’t make your position as a civil servant an extension of your political office. Once you are a civil servant and benefiting from a neutrality allowance, you must not show your political colours while working,” he advised.

Hon. Agama, while referencing recent remarks by NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, called for a balanced approach in dealing with cases of civil servants who breach neutrality ethics.

“I agree with Mustapha Gbande, but we should not dismiss people outrightly for showing political bias. Rather, they should be cautioned and reminded of their ethical obligations. If they continue to violate the rules, then appropriate disciplinary measures can follow,” he suggested.

The call reinforces long-standing directives from the Ghana Civil Service, which has repeatedly cautioned employees against partisan conduct to preserve the principles of impartiality and anonymity within the service.

Observers note that while the enforcement of neutrality remains crucial, punitive actions without due process could raise broader concerns about fairness and freedom of expression.

Institutions such as the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) have warned that mass dismissals or purges based on perceived political leanings could undermine the foundations of Ghana’s democracy.
