The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta Region, and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on safety and bushfire prevention, particularly during the harmattan season.

The Regional General Manager of ECG, Volta Region, Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, paid a working visit to the Regional Fire Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFO II Joseph Tetteh Freeman, at the GNFS Regional Office in Ho to deepen inter-agency cooperation.

During the meeting, Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo stressed ECG’s commitment to sustaining the cordial relationship between the two institutions, noting that the harmattan period is often marked by increased cases of bushfires and fire outbreaks, some of which involve electrical installations.

She expressed appreciation to the Ghana National Fire Service for its continuous support to ECG across the districts, particularly in responding swiftly to fire incidents related to electricity infrastructure. Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo also requested periodic fire safety education sessions and drills for ECG staff to enhance their capacity in fire prevention and emergency response.

Responding, the Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Joseph Tetteh Freeman, described the visit as timely and significant. He underscored the need for close collaboration, explaining that ECG is often the first point of contact during fire outbreaks involving electricity, making effective coordination between the two institutions critical.

ACFO II Freeman further indicated that the Fire Service would intensify public education on bushfire prevention during the harmattan season. He disclosed that district fire commanders had been directed to step up community engagement and awareness creation within their respective jurisdictions.

In another development, Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo commended all District Fire Commanders for their dedication and commitment to duty in their various districts. She reiterated ECG’s unwavering commitment to safety, bushfire prevention, and public education, stressing that the protection of lives, property, and critical electricity infrastructure remains a shared responsibility.

The meeting was attended by the Regional Engineer of ECG, Ing. Godfrey Awuku; the Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO I Hope Bedzrah; and the Regional Human Resource Officer of the Fire Service, DO II Yela Kotoku.

The visit underscores the mutual commitment of ECG and the Ghana National Fire Service to enhance safety, prevent fire outbreaks, and protect communities across the Volta and Oti Regions through strong inter-agency collaboration.
