Ghana Condemns Military Takeover in Guinea-Bissau, Calls For Immediate Restoration of Constitutional Order

The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional usurpation of authority that threatens the democratic progress of the West African nation.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Wednesday, the government said the action by elements of the Guinea-Bissau armed forces represents “a direct assault on democratic governance” and disrupts the electoral process that followed the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23rd November, 2025.

The Ministry expressed profound concern over what it called a “brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people,” noting that the coup has dangerously interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the anticipated announcement of election results scheduled for 27th November, 2025.

Ghana is calling for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urging all political and security actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect the democratic process. The government stressed that any disputes arising from the elections must be addressed “solely through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.”

The statement also demanded the protection of civilians and foreign nationals, with particular emphasis on the safety of officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau. It urged the military authorities to guarantee their security and ensure their safe passage without delay.

Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid escalating tensions. The government reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a regional response in line with established protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.

The Ministry assured that Ghana remains committed to the collective efforts aimed at safeguarding stability and democratic norms across the West African region.
