Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has assured Ghanaians, particularly media practitioners, that the government has no intention of restricting freedom of expression, especially in the digital space.
Speaking at the launch of the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards in Accra on Thursday, October 9, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu reiterated the administration’s commitment to media freedom, while also calling for responsible use of social media.
“Let me assure you that the government does not intend to curb freedoms. President Mahama, as you know him, is one person who supports the expression of free speech. He is exceptionally tolerant and he is open to criticism,” he stated.
He, however, cautioned that with the growing influence of social media, there is a shared responsibility to protect Ghana’s social cohesion.
“But he, as President and as head of government, has the same responsibility as any leader anywhere to ensure that our social fabric is not turned asunder by the abuse of this new platform [social media],” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added.
The event also saw the inauguration of a nine-member committee to vet entries for this year’s GJA Awards, which aim to honour outstanding journalists across the country. The committee is chaired by Mr. Gabriel Bosompem, a former Commissioner of the National Media Commission and former Production Manager at TV3.
GJA President Albert Dwumfuor praised the continued commitment of Ghanaian journalists to national development and democratic values.
“As we launch the 29th GJA Awards today, let’s be reminded that the story of Ghana cannot be written without the voices of her journalists and that our future as a nation depends on the strength, integrity and patriotism of our media,” he said.
