By Jones Anlimah

Motorcycles have emerged as the leading contributors to road crashes in the Volta Region, according to mid-year data released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).

From January to June 2025, the region recorded 253 road crashes, an increase from 239 in the same period of 2024. The number of vehicles involved also rose from 388 to 424. Tragically, 61 lives were lost in the first half of 2025 compared to 40 deaths last year, while 273 people sustained various degrees of injuries, up from 173 in 2024.

The data reveals that motorcycles accounted for 48 percent of all vehicles involved in crashes, making them the single largest contributor. Private vehicles followed with 36 percent, and commercial vehicles constituted 16 percent. Motorcycles were again responsible for the majority of casualties, with 165 people injured and 32 killed in such incidents.

Pedestrian safety remains another area of concern, as 67 pedestrian knockdowns were recorded this year, compared to 40 in 2024. Of these, 16 resulted in deaths, while 51 others sustained injuries.

The report also shows that men continue to bear the brunt of road crashes, making up 79 percent of the fatalities, while women accounted for 21 percent. Age distribution figures indicate that 89 percent of victims were adults aged 18 years and above, with 11 percent being children below 18.

The NRSA notes that the upward trend underscores the urgent need for continued vigilance and adherence to road safety regulations, especially as motorcycles increasingly dominate regional crash statistics.
