The Member of Parliament for Central Tongu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze, has joined many Ghanaians in mourning the passing of former First Lady and gender advocate, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a resilient and visionary leader whose work transformed Ghana’s approach to women’s rights and gender protection.

Speaking in an interview on GBC’s Volta Star Radio, Hon. Hottordze recounted how he first learned of her passing through social media, initially hoping it was untrue until confirmation came from Hon. Rockson Dadeamekpor.

Reflecting on her legacy, the Central Tongu MP paid glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, calling her “very, very vocal, very, very resilient, and very, very astute.” He said her influence was instrumental in mobilizing women across the country to participate in governance and development.

Hon. Hottordze further highlighted Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ key role in championing laws and policies aimed at protecting women and promoting gender equality. “The affirmative action law, which we call the gender equality law, was her brainchild,” he noted, adding that her advocacy paved the way for women’s inclusion in leadership and decision-making at all levels.

He also lauded her unwavering stance against rape and gender-based violence, which, he said, inspired stronger public awareness and policy responses to protect victims and empower survivors. “She was a rare gem, a forerunner, and a forward-looking personality,” Hon. Hottordze said. “I pray that what she left behind will continue to grow.”

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, through the 31st December Women’s Movement, dedicated her life to empowering women economically, socially, and politically. Her work laid the foundation for gender-focused reforms and advocacy that continue to shape national discourse today.

As tributes pour in nationwide, her passing is being described as a great loss to Ghana, particularly in the fight for women’s rights and gender justice. Her legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for future generations to uphold the ideals of equality, empowerment, and social transformation.
