The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced that the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) will, for the first time since its establishment, purchase surplus grains from farmers during the 2025 harvest season.
The move comes in anticipation of a bumper grain harvest this year, coupled with carry-over stocks from the 2024 season, which could create a glut on the market.
According to the Ministry, government has made significant resources available to NAFCO to ensure the storage of excess produce. Officials say the intervention will not only help reduce post-harvest losses but also guarantee food reserves to cushion the country against future shortages and emergencies.
The Ministry has assured farmers that NAFCO will be actively present in the market to buy their produce and protect them from the adverse effects of oversupply. It further reiterated its commitment, in collaboration with stakeholders, to secure a sustainable and profitable market for every grain produced by Ghanaian farmers.
