Volta Region Shines in Rice Production: Local Output Can Feed Entire Nation

The Volta/Oti Regional Manager of the National Food Buffer Stock Company Limited, Mr. Bright Delali Kugbeadzor has stated that the Volta Region has an outstanding potential to feed the entire nation through its impressive local rice production.

Speaking on GBC Volta Star Radio’s Morning Show on 30th October 2025, Mr. Kugbeadzor revealed that this year’s rice harvest from the Volta Region alone could meet Ghana’s entire national rice demand.

“This year alone, the local rice production from the Volta Region can feed the entire nation of Ghana,” he said.

Mr. Kugbeadzor attributed this success to increased discipline, improved farming practices, and sustained government interventions aimed at promoting import substitution industries.

“It takes discipline to grow and sustain local import substitution industries across the world,” he emphasized.

He called on Ghanaians to patronize locally produced rice and other agricultural products to help reduce the nation’s reliance on imports, strengthen the local economy, and support farmers whose hard work continues to drive food security.

The Volta Region’s remarkable performance comes amid renewed efforts by government agencies and development partners to promote agricultural productivity through initiatives such as the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s interventions.

Industry observers have noted that the region’s rice output has benefited from improved access to markets, quality seeds, and increased mechanization. The collaboration between farmers, government agencies, and private stakeholders has also been key to achieving this milestone.

The Volta Region, one of Ghana’s 16 administrative regions, spans about 9,504 square kilometres, representing 3.9 percent of the country’s total land area. It continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food production and rural livelihoods.

As Ghana celebrates this milestone, agricultural stakeholders are urging continued investment in local production and processing to sustain the gains made.

“If we continue to support our local farmers and choose local rice, Ghana will not only be self-sufficient but also create thousands of jobs,” Mr. Kugbeadzor added.

The Volta Region’s success story underscores the transformative potential of local agriculture in achieving national food security and economic resilience.
