YEA Refutes Claims of Unpaid Salaries to 300 Staff

By Jones Anlimah

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has dismissed recent media reports alleging that about 300 of its staff across the country have gone ten months without receiving their salaries. The Agency described the claims as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that all legitimate employees on its approved payroll have been paid up to date.

In a statement issued by the Agency’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, YEA clarified that its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Malik Basintale, assumed office in February 2025 , only eight months ago and could therefore not have failed to pay salaries for ten months as reported.

According to the release, upon assumption of office, Mr. Basintale inherited the existing payroll, which was duly presented to and approved by the Board of YEA. The statement further indicated that since February 2025, all staff members captured on the official payroll have received consistent salary payments up to September 2025.

The Agency also explained that a comprehensive staff audit was undertaken earlier this year to ensure that only legitimate employees were maintained on the payroll, a move aimed at protecting public funds and ensuring accountability. All staff who were verified through this exercise have continued to receive their entitlements.

YEA emphasised that some staff contracts had expired prior to the CEO’s assumption of office, and affected individuals were advised to reapply for renewal through their respective directors. Those whose contracts were renewed have since been reinstated on the payroll.

Management expressed concern over reports of hardship among Ghanaian youth, including alleged cases of suicide attempts linked to unemployment pressures. The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to creating sustainable job opportunities and improving the welfare of its personnel.

“The Youth Employment Agency remains committed to protecting the interests of its staff, ensuring accountability, and delivering on its mandate to create sustainable employment for Ghanaian youth,” the statement concluded.
