The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has assured Ghanaians that several major projects across the country’s transport sector will be completed and commissioned in the coming months.

Speaking to GBCNews on the sidelines of the launch of the Maiden Transport and Logistics Fair 2025 in Ho, the Minister said a recent strategic review of agencies under his Ministry showed remarkable progress in aviation, ports, rail, roads, licensing services, and maritime operations.

“It is only a matter of time. The Ghanaian people will soon see us commissioning all these massive projects that our agencies are undertaking,” Hon. Nikpe noted.

At the ports, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has begun dredging works to deepen the harbour and enable larger vessels to dock. The Minister also disclosed that GPHA has cleared a longstanding backlog of containers at Tema Port.

“Containers do not wait for us in the port to come and clear them. We are waiting for the containers the moment they arrive, they are cleared.” he explained.

According to the Minister, to ease congestion at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), work is underway to repurpose Terminal 2 to serve both domestic and international passengers. Additionally, construction of a nine-storey car park is ongoing to expand capacity for vehicles.

“By the close of the year, Terminal 2 will serve passengers once again,” the Minister confirmed.

The Sector Minister also noted that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has cleared a backlog of 266,866 unprinted driver’s license cards and has introduced a 24-hour service at its Adenta office. He added that Plans are also underway to commission 46 satellite offices nationwide.

Hon. Nikpe indicated that the long-stalled Western Rail Line project has resumed, with contractors returning to site, while the Mpakadan–Tema railway line is nearing full operational status. “Very soon, they will run three rounds a day from Tema to Mpakadan, carrying both goods and passengers.”

At the Tema Shipyard, the minister said four vessels are currently undergoing maintenance. He described this as a revival of the shipyard’s original mandate to construct, maintain, and overhaul ships.

He concluded that with sustained commitment and collaboration, Ghana could position itself as the hub of aviation, maritime, rail, and road transport services in the West African sub-region.
