The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has withdrawn the Lithium Agreement currently before Parliament to allow for further consultations, review, and enhancement.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 10th December 2025, the Ministry said the decision follows extensive stakeholder engagements across the country, during which substantive concerns were raised about the terms and long-term implications of the agreement. The Sector Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, formally initiated the withdrawal to ensure that the final agreement reflects national interest and incorporates the views of citizens.
According to the Ministry, the move demonstrates government’s commitment to participatory governance and fairness in the management of Ghana’s natural resources. The statement explained that feedback from stakeholders revealed the need for deeper consideration and broader consensus-building to secure a more robust legal framework for the exploitation of lithium and other strategic minerals.
The Ministry assured the public that all proposals and recommendations received during the consultations will be reviewed thoroughly. A revised agreement aligned with Ghana’s laws, strengthened by stakeholder input, and shaped in the national interest will be re-submitted to Parliament in due course.
Director of Communications at the Ministry, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, expressed gratitude to individuals and institutions whose insights informed the decision. She reaffirmed government’s resolve to secure long-term national benefits while upholding transparency, fairness, and public trust.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborative governance aimed at promoting the prosperity and well-being of all Ghanaians.
