A major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company’s (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has disrupted power supply to some parts of the country.

The incident occurred at about 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, affecting operations at one of the country’s key power transmission facilities and temporarily impacting electricity generation and transmission.

In a statement issued in Tema, GRIDCo said emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and are working to contain the situation and assess the extent of the damage.

The company said a comprehensive evaluation is currently underway to determine the full impact of the fire and to guide restoration efforts.

GRIDCo assured the public that its technical teams are working around the clock to stabilise the system and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

It also noted that every effort is being made to minimise the disruption to electricity supply across affected areas.

The company urged the public to remain calm, stressing that the situation is under control.

GRIDCo says it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

The Akosombo Substation is a critical component of Ghana’s national electricity transmission network, playing a vital role in the distribution of power from generating plants to distribution utilities and bulk customers across the country.
