Ho Teaching Hospital has welcomed government’s decision to include the facility in a nationwide project to establish cardiology centres, describing the move as a major boost to specialist healthcare delivery in the Volta Region and adjoining areas.
Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr. (Med.) Hintermann Mbroh, made the remarks during a media stakeholder engagement organised by the Governing Board in Ho.
President John Dramani Mahama during a recent Tour of the region last month announced of plans to build a modern cardiac center equipped with a catheterization laboratory at the Ho Teaching Hospital. The project aims to decentralize specialized heart care in Ghana and reduce the need for patients in the region and other adjoining areas to travel long distances for treatment.
Dr. Mbroh said management received the news with excitement and gratitude because the project would significantly improve access to specialist cardiac services for thousands of people who currently travel long distances for treatment.
“We appreciate and we are grateful to His Excellency the President because we understand that Ho Teaching Hospital has been added to that particular project,” Dr. Mbroh stated.
According to him, the establishment of a cardiology centre would mark a significant milestone in the hospital’s efforts to expand specialist medical services and improve health outcomes in the Volta Region.
He explained that cardiovascular diseases were becoming increasingly common and required timely diagnosis and specialist treatment, making the project critical to healthcare delivery.
Dr. Mbroh said the proposed centre would strengthen the hospital’s capacity to diagnose and manage heart conditions while reducing referrals to teaching hospitals in Accra and Kumasi.
He noted that the hospital had over the years expanded several specialist services and remained committed to positioning itself as one of Ghana’s leading tertiary healthcare institutions.
The CEO indicated that the cardiology project formed part of broader efforts by management to modernise healthcare delivery through infrastructure development, specialist training and technological innovation.
He said management was determined to ensure that residents of the Volta Region had access to quality specialist healthcare without having to travel outside the region whenever possible.
Chairman of the Governing Board, Dr. Delanyo Yao Tsidi Dovlo, reiterated the Board’s commitment to supporting initiatives that would enhance healthcare delivery at the hospital.
He appealed to stakeholders to support the hospital’s development agenda, emphasising that expanding specialist healthcare required collective effort.
The Board Chairman expressed confidence that the cardiology centre would improve healthcare delivery and reinforce the hospital’s position as a leading tertiary healthcare institution.
