AMMREN Urges Stronger Media Role in Africa’s Fight Against Malaria and Other Health Challenges

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) has called for stronger investment in the media as part of efforts to eliminate malaria and improve health across the African Continent.

Speaking at the 75th Regional Committee Meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region in Lusaka, Zambia, AMMREN commended WHO and its partners for their ongoing works but stressed that more needs to be done to meet key health targets.

In a statement delivered on malaria elimination, the Executive Secretary for African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), Dr. Charity Binka, said communication is just as important as scientific tools and political commitment. According to her, journalists play a critical role in amplifying health messages, explaining new innovations like vaccines, and keeping leaders accountable.

“Health interventions succeed when communities understand, trust, and actively participate in them. Effective communication is therefore key to achieving the vision of a malaria-free Africa,” Dr. Binka said.

Presenting a second statement on improving health and well-being for one billion more people in Africa. Dr. Binka highlighted the need for a multi-sectoral approach that goes beyond tackling diseases to include better nutrition, mental health, and gender-responsive health systems.

She noted that while progress has been made in fighting preventable diseases, Africa must intensify efforts through stronger partnerships among governments, health institutions, civil society, and the media.

“AMMREN stands ready to work alongside WHO, African governments, and partners to ensure that no voice is left unheard and no community is left behind,” Dr. Binka said.

AMMREN is made up of journalists, researchers, and health advocates across Africa who are committed to bridging the gap between research, policy, and public education through timely and culturally relevant information.
