The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has declared a nationwide withdrawal of over months of unpaid salaries and what it describes as the persistent neglect and unfair treatment of its members.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, October 2, the Association revealed that over 200 junior doctors have been working for between 10 and 14 months without pay. Additionally, some medical officers who were previously on government payroll have had their salaries halted without explanation, while more than 800 medical doctors continue to await posting for the past one year and four months.
Despite what the group says have been repeated engagements with the authorities, no concrete solutions have been offered.
As part of its directive, the JDA announced that all members will withdraw outpatient services from Tuesday, October 7 to Thursday, October 9, 2025. The Association further stated that emergency services will also be withdrawn from Friday, October 10, until further notice. However, inpatients already on admission will continue to receive care until their discharge, but no new cases will be admitted.
The JDA emphasized that it will no longer tolerate what it calls the “continued exploitation of junior doctors,” adding that the responsibility for any disruption in healthcare delivery rests with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana.
The Association is calling on all stakeholders to intervene urgently to resolve the issues and restore normalcy in the country’s health sector.
