Akatsi North District Assembly Extends Support to People With Disabilities

By News Desk

The Akatsi North District Assembly has provided various forms of support to People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district as part of efforts to improve their welfare and promote inclusivity.

The initiative, funded through the District Assembly Common Fund’s PWD component and supported by the Assembly’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF), seeks to empower beneficiaries through training, assistive devices, educational scholarships, medical support, and financial assistance for business start-ups.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North, Hon. Bless Kojo Katamani, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in society.

“We are gathered here today because of the vulnerable among us—Persons with Disabilities,” Hon. Katamani stated. “This initiative reflects the government’s vision to ensure that all PWDs live dignified lives, as provided for in Act 715, Section 42 of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006.”

He announced that a total of 57 beneficiaries—comprising 25 males and 32 females—received assistance. The package included 27 income-generating items, 3 assistive devices, 15 educational scholarships, 6 payments for medical bills, and financial support for 6 small business start-ups.

Hon. Katamani revealed that this is the second distribution of such support this year, with a third phase expected before the end of 2025. He encouraged beneficiaries to use the items responsibly, noting that the District Fund Management Committee would monitor their use and retrieve any misused items.

“We want to ensure that every cedi invested truly impacts lives. This support must bring change and not be wasted,” he stressed.

Some beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to the government and the assembly for the assistance.

“I’m very impressed about what the government has done,” said Benjamin Hodzi.

“We are happy; we’ll no longer be beaten by rain. They should continue and not forget us,” added Francis Shilevi.

Others, including Beauty Axorsodey, Cudjoe Jiagge, and David Takpa, also expressed gratitude to the President, the DCE, and the Member of Parliament for their continued support.

The DCE disclosed that the second phase of the intervention was valued at five hundred thousand cedis, underscoring the Assembly’s determination to create an inclusive environment for all residents.

The Akatsi North District Assembly’s support for PWDs forms part of a broader government effort to ensure social inclusion and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities across the country.
