Volta Regional Minister Urges Youth to Champion ECOWAS Ideals

By Jones Anlimah

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has called on the youth to actively embrace and promote the ideals of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), describing them as the torchbearers of regional integration and unity.

He made the call at a regional sensitization workshop on ECOWAS protocols for secondary and tertiary students, held at Ho in the Volta Region. The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in collaboration with the ECOWAS National Office.

Hon. Gunu underscored the importance of awareness creation about ECOWAS protocols, especially among young people, to ensure the success of regional cooperation and economic integration.

“As a border region and gateway between Ghana and our sister countries in the sub-region, the Volta Region plays a crucial role in advancing the ideals and objectives of ECOWAS,” he said. “By deepening awareness of the free movement of persons, goods, and services, we are nurturing a generation that values cooperation, tolerance, and unity among West Africans.”

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ECOWAS vision of “a West Africa without borders, united in peace and prosperity.” He noted that under the current administration, Ghana’s foreign policy continues to focus on economic diplomacy, regional trade, and peacebuilding.

He also commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Directorate of Multilateral and International Organisations, and the ECOWAS Commission for their efforts in promoting regional awareness and cooperation.

Ambassador Francis Danti Kotia, Coordinating Director for Multilateral and International Organisations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted ECOWAS’s enduring contributions to regional stability and development since its establishment in 1975.

He noted that ECOWAS continues to play a critical role in advancing political stability, economic growth, and social development across the region despite current geopolitical challenges.

“Our beloved Ghana remains a pillar of stability, and our commitment to ECOWAS and its objectives is resolute,” Ambassador Kotia stated. “Beyond peace and security, ECOWAS protocols on Free Movement, Residence and Establishment have expanded economic activities and enhanced cross-border cooperation.”

Ambassador Kotia further encouraged students to explore opportunities available through ECOWAS programmes, including scholarships, internships, and youth exchanges, emphasizing that “knowledge breeds participation.”

He urged young people to see ECOWAS as a “community of people, not nations,” and to use innovation and collaboration to find African solutions to African challenges.

The workshop aimed to promote a deeper understanding of ECOWAS’s role in fostering regional unity, peace, and economic prosperity.
