The Government of Ghana has announced that a state funeral will be held in honour of the late former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra.
According to a statement from the Presidency and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, the decision to accord Mrs. Rawlings a state funeral is in recognition of her invaluable contributions to the promotion of women’s and children’s rights, as well as her role in national development.
The statement noted that the funeral will be held under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, who described the late Mrs. Rawlings as “a towering figure in Ghana’s political and social transformation whose legacy of advocacy and empowerment continues to inspire generations.”
Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001. She was widely celebrated for her leadership in founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, an organization that championed women’s empowerment, education, and entrepreneurship across the country.
Details regarding the funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Funeral Planning Committee in due course.
