National Chief Imam Condemns Shooting at Ho Central Mosque, Calls for Impartial Police Action

The National Chief Imam of Ghana, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has strongly condemned the shooting incident that occurred at the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region, describing it as a grave affront to Islam and a threat to national security.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Muslim community in Ghana, His Eminence expressed “utter disgust” at what he described as Muslims turning their weapons on fellow Muslims within the sanctity of a mosque. The incident, which occurred on Friday, December 26, 2025, left several persons injured.

The National Chief Imam described the violence as “a deviation from basic civility, a tribute to outright impunity, and an attack on Islamic sanctity,” stressing that mosques must remain places of peace, worship, and unity.

According to the statement, the shooting is linked to the ongoing contest over the Volta Regional Imamship between Sheikh Ali Muniru and Sheikh Anas. His Eminence, however, reaffirmed that Sheikh Ali Muniru is the legitimate Volta Regional Imam, with Sheikh Anas serving as his Deputy.

He clarified that the selection of Sheikh Muniru “was not an imposition,” but rather the outcome of extensive consultation and mediation, adding that it was therefore troubling that a matter he considers resolved continues to fuel violence.

Referring to both clerics as his “children,” the National Chief Imam said he expects maturity, solidarity, and cordiality from them in their service to Allah and humanity. He further urged their followers to remain law-abiding and peace-loving, in accordance with Islamic teachings.

His Eminence also appealed to the Ghana Police Service to handle the matter with fairness and neutrality. “Selective justice is tantamount to injustice,” he cautioned, calling for professionalism and impartiality in the investigation and enforcement process.

In concluding the statement, the National Chief Imam prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and reminded the Muslim community of the Quranic injunction on unity and reconciliation: “The believers are brothers. So, make reconciliation between your brothers. And fear Allah, so that you may receive mercy.” (Quran 49:10).

He also prayed for peace and unity within the Muslim Ummah and for Ghana as a whole.

The statement was signed by Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam.
