President John Dramani Mahama has directed an expansion in recruitment into the country’s security services, increasing the intake from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over a four-year period.
The directive was issued following a high-level meeting between the President and heads of the various security agencies, as well as key government officials, to review the ongoing recruitment process.
According to a statement from the Presidency Communications Office, the President was briefed on the current exercise before announcing the significant increase aimed at strengthening the nation’s security architecture.
President Mahama also emphasised the need for transparency and fairness in the recruitment process, directing the heads of the security agencies to ensure that the exercise is conducted in a credible and accountable manner.
The meeting brought together top officials including the Minister for the Interior, Acting Minister for Defence, Chief of Staff, Secretary to the President, National Security Coordinator, as well as heads of agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission.
The move is expected to boost personnel capacity across the security services and enhance national security operations in the coming years.
The Presidency says further details on the recruitment modalities will be communicated by the respective agencies in due course.
