By Jones Anlimah

The Paramount Chief of Avatime in the Volta Region, Osie Adza Tekpor VII, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for the decision to upgrade the Ohawu Agricultural College into a campus of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Science.

In a press statement, the traditional ruler described the move as a significant step toward advancing agricultural education and economic development in the Volta Region and the country at large.

He noted that the upgrade would create opportunities for young people to acquire relevant skills and expertise needed to boost productivity within Ghana’s agricultural sector, particularly for both local consumption and export.

Osie Adza Tekpor VII further indicated that the establishment of the university campus could help revive the cultivation of key economic crops such as cocoa, coffee, oil palm, coconut, banana, and organic brown rice, which have seen a decline in recent years.

The Paramount Chief also observed that the Ohawu campus adds to a growing list of higher education and health institutions established in the Volta Region, including the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho Technical University, and the Ho Teaching Hospital.

While expressing appreciation, he appealed to the President to prioritise the rehabilitation of roads within the Avatime enclave to support tourism and socio-economic development. The roads mentioned include stretches linking Avatime Fume to Gbadzeme, Amedzofe township roads, as well as routes connecting Amedzofe to Kpedze, Avatime Vane, and Dzogbefeme.

Osie Adza Tekpor VII also encouraged qualified Ghanaians, especially those in the Volta Region, to take advantage of the upgraded institution to build their professional capacity and improve their prospects in the job market.

He reaffirmed his support for initiatives aimed at improving education, agriculture, and infrastructure development across the region.
