The Volta Region has received 900 laptops and accessories under government’s One Million Coders Programme, a major step toward equipping young people with digital skills for the future.
The equipment, which will support the first phase of the initiative in 16 districts across the region, has been officially handed over to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC). The programme forms part of the government’s broader agenda to build a digitally skilled workforce and expand opportunities for Ghana’s youth.
Volta Regional Manager of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Dr. Francis Seglah, said the initiative fulfills a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama to make digital training accessible to the Ghanaian youth.
“We are here today, the 27th day of April 2026, receiving 900 laptops with accessories for the beginning of the programme,” he said. “About 16 districts in Volta are to start the first phase, and sooner, the second phase will follow.”

Dr. Seglah noted that the laptops would be distributed as quickly as possible to ensure beneficiaries can begin training without delay. He added that registration is already underway, with significant public interest.
“My check from the website as of yesterday shows that within just a day or two of opening the portal, over 2,000 people had registered,” he disclosed.
He explained that the programme will offer a range of practical digital courses, including website design, internet applications, and Microsoft Office tools, to help participants develop skills relevant to today’s job market.
“The One Million Coders Programme will help the youth especially,” Dr. Seglah stated. “Without computing skills, it will be very difficult to succeed in business and in today’s world of technology.”

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the Chief Director, Alhaji Mohammed Avona Akape, assured that the devices would be properly safeguarded and distributed for their intended purpose.
“We are going to make sure that we keep it and send it to the various assemblies for its purpose,” he said.
Alhaji Akape also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations for spearheading the initiative.
“We hope that we, in the Volta Region, will ensure that the project succeeds,” he added.

Training under the programme is expected to commence on May 4, with qualified instructors set to guide participants through various specialised digital courses. Officials believe the initiative will significantly enhance digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and employability among young people in the region.
